The Shadow of the Green Mountain is a 4000 word fantasy short story. The tale takes place five thousand years in the past, or, just as many years in the future. That will be your decision:

Here's a sample:

Indu felt a morning spirit moving through the hut in the shadow of the green mountain. In the warm time, every morning, it came to him and his brother, Manu. Cooling and tickling his back, it ran its invisible fingers up his spine and through his soft black hair. Morning spirits loved to play during the warm time. Indu slowly stretched out and rolled over onto his back, snuggling a bit longer and enjoying his mossy leaf bed's fading warmth.

Manu, his older brother and first to rise started the cook fire. By the time the fire glowed, he had expected Indu to rise and help collect the morning meal. Not far from the hut, they moved together slowly through the rice fields, thick bushes, and clumps of fruit-laden trees along the foothills of the green mountain. Manu always picked and cleaned the fruit and berries, and Indu picked the grain heads and nuts. Manu collected brook water in a gourd each day. That privilege belonged to Manu. Indu feared the brook and the slimy dark things that lived within its waters. He admired Manu's courage.
